Giovanni Paolo Panini was born in Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna region, Italy), but spent his whole artistic career in Rome. As a painter, Panini is best known for his vistas of Rome, in which he took a particular interest in the citys antiquities. Although already recognized as an independent painter of landscapes and architectural and perspective views, Panini attended the drawing academy of the figure. This is the case with the DAM picture, a horizontal scene with Roman ruins including the pyramid of Caius Cestius on the right and Trajan’s column in the background. Rome, with its evocative ruins, was the ideal backdrop for pictures to which the artist often included figures from a mythological or historical event to enliven the composition. The subject is a capriccio (literally, a caprice), indicating a composition where real and invented architectural structures are brought together in imaginary settings.
